self discovery
.
Exhibitionism is a public act
A self-exposure or self-display in front of strangers
Now why would someone want to expose themselves to strangers?
In fact, why expose oneself at all?
*
Because the world is our mirror
We see ourselves through the eyes of others
Especially strangers
Why strangers?
*
OK
Let’s say you have a killer body (you do, don’t you?)
and you expose it to your husband
And he’s, like, seen it maybe a thousand times
And he stifles a yawn
*
Enter the stranger
The stranger has never seen you before
It is a new start
It is exhibitionism
*
And it need not be sexual
Say for example we want to explore some new aspect of ourselves
Go where we’ve never gone before
Well…
Our friends won’t let us
Why?
Because our friends “know” us
They remember us
They remember who we were, and what we were
And despite any new “us” we may expose to them
They will filter it out
And continue to see us as they have always seen us
*
Strangers however are not so blinded
Strangers cannot remember what we were in the past
They can only see us as we are now
So in front of strangers, we can be anything we want
*
Strangers see us for the first time
And they become the mirror in which we see ourselves
In which we see the new self we wish to explore
Strangers reflect back what we are now
Friends reflect back what we were in the past
*
But it goes further than that
If we expose ourselves, or play out a new role, in front of friends
We are all the time concerned about what they may think
And that holds us back
But we have no such reservations with strangers
We don’t really care what they think
And that frees us up!
We can take it – whatever it is – a lot further
*
Thus exhibitionism becomes a way of exploring new roles
A way of Self-Discovery
With the public as our witness

That you played out in public
